Development Program

Building Smarter, More Confident Netballers

The NQNA Development Program is designed for athletes who have established the fundamental skills of netball and are ready to take the next step in their development. Delivered over a structured 9-week term, the Development Program challenges athletes to refine their technical execution, develop greater game awareness, and build the confidence, habits, and decision-making required to perform consistently in competitive netball.

Whether your goal is to become a stronger club player, prepare for representative opportunities, or simply continue improving your game, the Development Program provides the coaching and environment to help you reach the next level.

Who Is The Development Program For?

The Development Program is designed for athletes approximately 11–14 years of age who:
  • Have established the fundamentals of netball
  • Play club or school netball regularly
  • Are committed to improving their performance
  • Aspire to representative or performance pathways
  • Want additional coaching alongside their regular training

Athletes should have a sound understanding of the basic rules and skills of the game and be ready to embrace a more challenging learning environment.

Why Development Matters

The difference between good players and great players is often found in the details.

The Development Program focuses on refining technique, improving consistency, and helping athletes understand not just how to perform a skill, but when, why, and where to use it effectively.

As athletes become stronger decision-makers and more adaptable players, they develop the confidence to influence games rather than simply participate in them.

What Athletes Will Learn

Throughout the 9-week program, athletes progressively develop the technical, tactical, physical, and mental skills required to succeed in modern netball.

Technical Skill Development

Refine and strengthen the skills that underpin consistent performance. Areas include:

  • Advanced passing and receiving
  • Movement efficiency
  • Timing and connection
  • Ball security under pressure
  • Shooting technique
  • Defensive positioning
  • Interception skills

Position-Specific Development

Athletes begin developing a deeper understanding of the unique demands of their preferred playing positions. Learning includes:

  • Attacking movement patterns
  • Defensive responsibilities
  • Circle attack combinations
  • Circle defence principles
  • Transition play
  • Positional decision making

Tactical Understanding

Develop a greater understanding of the game beyond individual skills. Athletes learn:

  • Reading the play
  • Creating and exploiting space
  • Team attacking principles
  • Defensive systems
  • Decision making under pressure
  • Game awareness and adaptability

Performance Habits

Success isn't built on talent alone. Athletes begin developing the habits that underpin consistent performance, including:

  • Communication
  • Leadership
  • Competitive training behaviours
  • Focus and concentration
  • Accountability
  • Resilience under pressure

More Than Just Netball Skills

At NQNA, we believe developing better athletes starts with developing better people. Throughout the Development Program, athletes are encouraged to strengthen:

  • Confidence
  • Leadership
  • Resilience
  • Communication
  • Teamwork
  • Responsibility
  • Growth mindset

These qualities not only improve performance on the court but also support success in school, sport, and everyday life.

A Structured 9-Week Curriculum

The Development Program follows a progressive curriculum designed to build upon previous learning each week. Athletes revisit and refine key concepts while being introduced to increasingly complex technical and tactical challenges. This structured approach ensures athletes continue developing at an appropriate pace while building the consistency required for long-term success.

Delivered By Experienced Coaches

Development athletes are coached by experienced NQNA coaches who understand how to challenge athletes while maintaining a positive and supportive learning environment. Our coaches focus on:

  • Individual improvement
  •  Technical excellence
  • Game understanding
  • Performance habits
  • Building confident, independent athletes

Every session is designed to help athletes leave with greater confidence, stronger skills, and a deeper understanding of the game.

Preparing Athletes For The Next Level

The Development Program bridges the gap between foundational learning and performance netball. Athletes who demonstrate the required technical ability, game understanding, commitment, and performance habits may progress into:

  • Performance Programs
  • Representative Preparation Programs
  • Specialist Clinics
  • High Performance Opportunities

Our goal is to prepare athletes not only to perform at higher levels, but to enjoy the journey of continual improvement.

Challenge Yourself.

Develop Your Game.

The NQNA Development Program is for athletes who are ready to move beyond the fundamentals and invest in becoming smarter, more confident, and more complete netballers.

We acknowledge the traditional owners of the land on which we train, develop and play. We pay our respects to their elders, past, present, and emerging, and extend that acknowledgement to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples who choose our services.

We thank the traditional custodians for the opportunity to operate on this land so we can help all people improve their lives regardless of race, religion, gender, sexual preference, or background.

We are committed to reconciliation and pledge for it to live in the hearts, minds, and actions of all at NQNA.
