Off-Season Fundamentals

Master The Fundamentals. Build The Platform For What Comes Next.

The NQNA 4-Week Off-Season Fundamentals Program is designed to sharpen the essential individual skills that underpin great netball.

Delivered across four 60-minute sessions, the program strips the game back to the key technical building blocks every athlete needs—regardless of age, position or playing level.

From strong, purposeful drives and quality passing from both hands to confident catching, effective footwork and disciplined defensive technique, athletes will have the opportunity to refine the details that can sometimes get lost during the competitive season.

Whether you're relatively new to netball or an experienced representative athlete, the off-season is the perfect time to revisit, refine and cement your fundamentals before progressing into more advanced pre-season training.

Who Is The Fundamentals Program For?

Because the focus is on individual skill development rather than age or team structures, activities can be appropriately progressed, challenged and tailored to each participant. It is ideal for athletes who are:

  • Newer to netball and wanting to establish sound technique
  • Returning to the game and looking for a refresher
  • Club athletes wanting to strengthen their individual skills
  • Representative athletes looking to refine the details
  • Preparing for upcoming trials or pre-season training
  • Wanting to correct technical habits before they become ingrained
  • Looking to stay active and purposeful during the off-season
Everyone needs fundamentals. The level of challenge simply changes as the athlete develops.

Why Train Fundamentals In The Off-Season?

During the competitive season, training naturally becomes focused on teams, combinations, structures, opposition and preparing for the next game. The off-season gives athletes something incredibly valuable—time to work on themselves.

Without the immediate pressure of competition, athletes can slow skills down, examine technique, make changes and then build those movements back up to speed.

The aim isn't to learn complicated new skills. It's to become exceptionally good at the actions athletes perform over and over again every time they step onto a netball court.

Strong fundamentals create the platform for everything that follows.

What Athletes Will Work On

Across the four-week program, athletes will focus on the core individual skills that influence performance across every position on the court.

Strong Drives - Learning to move with purpose and create a clear passing option. Athletes will work on:

  • Explosive first movement
  • Strong changes of pace and direction
  • Driving onto the ball
  • Timing
  • Creating separation
  • Presenting a clear target
  • Attacking Intercepts
Quality Passing - Building confidence and accuracy from either hand. Athletes will work on:
  • Strong shoulder passing
  • Passing effectively from both hands
  • Accuracy and placement
  • Appropriate ball speed
  • Passing to space
  • Executing under pressure
Footwork & Turning  -  Creating efficient movement after receiving the ball. Athletes will work on:
  • Stride landing correctly and balanced
  • Outside-foot land and turn
  • Body positioning
  • Turning efficiently
  • Protecting the ball
  • Preparing quickly for the next action
Catching With Confidence - Building strong, reliable hands. Athletes will work on:
  • Catching Mechanics
  • Attacking the ball
  • Catching at speed
  • Strong hand position
  • Ball security
  • Catching under pressure
  • Connecting the catch into the next movement
Defensive Fundamentals - Developing disciplined and effective individual defence. Athletes will work on:
  • Hands over pressure
  • Dictating the attacker's movement
  • Denying space
  • Body positioning Footwork
  • Contesting without compromising defensive position

Fundamentals Aren't Just For Beginners

The best athletes don't outgrow the fundamentals—they execute them better.

As athletes progress through representative and performance pathways, the speed, pressure and complexity of the game increase. Strong technical foundations allow athletes to execute effectively when those demands increase.

For developing athletes, this program establishes good habits. For experienced athletes, it provides an opportunity to refine technique, identify small inefficiencies and ensure the foundations remain strong before progressing into more complex training.

Four Weeks. Clear Purpose.

The program is deliberately short and focused. Across 4 x 60-minute sessions, athletes will revisit and progressively challenge the fundamental skills of the game. Rather than trying to cover everything, the program concentrates on a small number of high-value skills and provides athletes with the repetition, feedback and coaching required to improve them.

Each skill can be progressed according to the athlete's current ability, ensuring newer athletes are supported while experienced players remain appropriately challenged.

Delivered By Experienced Coaches

Sessions are delivered by experienced NQNA coaches who understand that quality development isn't simply about completing drills—it is about identifying the small technical details that can make a significant difference to performance.

Athletes receive coaching, correction and individual feedback throughout the program, with an emphasis on understanding not only what to do, but how and why to do it effectively.

The Bridge Between Seasons

The 4-Week Off-Season Fundamentals Program provides the ideal bridge between the end of the competitive season and the beginning of pre-season preparation.

Use the off-season to reset technique, strengthen good habits and address the small things. Then, when pre-season arrives, you're ready to move forward rather than starting again.

Get The Basics Brilliant

Great netball isn't built on complicated skills. It's built on simple skills performed exceptionally well, consistently and under pressure.

Refine the technique.

Cement the habits.

Build the foundation for what's next.
